Viscosity in hydraulic fluids



Viscosity is a key property of hydraulic fluids, indicating the fluid’s resistance to flow. It describes how thick or thin the fluid is, which directly impacts how well it can lubricate components and transmit power within the system. In hydraulic systems, the right viscosity ensures smooth operation, efficient power transfer, and proper lubrication.

If it is out of range, various scenarios could happen, such as leaks, pressure losses, increased energy consumption and many more.

Why monitoring viscosity is important

Monitoring viscosity is essential for maintaining the health and efficiency of hydraulic systems. Ensuring the fluid stays within the optimal viscosity range

  • Prevents Component Damage: Proper viscosity reduces wear and tear on system components, extending their lifespan.
  • Ensures Efficient Operation: The right viscosity ensures smooth operation and minimizes energy losses due to friction or leakage.
  • Maintains System Reliability: Regular monitoring helps detect and correct viscosity issues before they lead to system failures.

How we test for it

  • Kinematic viscosity testing: Kinematic viscosity testing measures how long it takes for a hydraulic fluid to flow through a capillary tube under the influence of gravity. This method provides a precise measurement of viscosity, typically expressed in centistokes (cSt).
  • Dynamic viscosity testing: Dynamic viscosity testing involves measuring the fluid’s resistance to flow using a rotational viscometer. This method is useful for both Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids.

Within the specified range, the fluid is performing as expected whereas any deviation from this requires investigation of the root cause.

How to solve it

If the viscosity is significantly out of range, replacing the fluid with one that meets the system’s specifications may be necessary.
